Film Festival

I pushed in line of my fellow peer’s and made my way to the front, finally I was in the bus. On Wednesday the 11th of November our annual Film Festival was held at the Extreme Screen in Sylvia Park, our school along with Ruapotoka School had a combined session.

This year was Ruapotoka’s very first year being present at the Film Festival this meant it was their first year entering their movies. We entered Theater two and found Ruapotoka already seated. Listening, Silence and appropriate applause was compulsory throughout the screening of the movies.

Finally I was seated, it was time to get this started. The movies ran by fast and already we went across a lot of amazing movies.  All of the movies were absolutely amazing but we came across one that I really really loved. Law and Order - Room 1, Pt England.

Their movie was based on the use of our language, and how sometimes what we say may seem like joke, but really could be offending. The actors were amazing. Overall the Manakalani Film Festival was a huge success, it was an amazing day.

Inspiration Talk

This morning after Morning Tea, the Year 8 student’s got the opportunity to talk and participate in a inspiration talk with Mr Andrew Patterson. Our inspiration talk was based around us attending college next year and the daily problems that we will be facing, like being time wise, and making the right choices.

During the talk we came across the '7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens' we were all firstly shown two movies, summarising all the 7 habits, I watched the clip and found that theses habits are surly going to be happening in college.

7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens :

1. Be Proactive
2. Begin with the end in mind
3. Put First things First
4. Think Win Win
5. Seek first to understand, then to be understood
6. Synergize
7. Sharpen the Saw

After watching the 2 little clips, it made me more confident about what college may be like next year. It has also taught me that, time is precious cause we have some much to do in so little time, so it's important that we are time wise.

Animals are based everywhere, and to prove that, team 4 are going on a world wide safari. Team 4 are taking a world wide safari, visiting places they never knew about, not only to learn about it but to also explore the wild life.

Humans are what make up the earth and this term, team 5 are not only learning about animals, but always humans. Humans have been on earth for quite a while now, but not everyone of us are the same. Humans have also learn’t to adapt to their surroundings, like myself I have learnt that the weather changes a lot, so it is important to have the appropriate clothing.

Hobsonville Point Primary School - GEG NZ

On Wednesday the 12th of August, the Year 7 & 8 students of Extension got the opportunity to attend GEG NZ Sumit Group 2015 ( Google for Education Groups New Zealand ). This year marked the first year of it being held, and the students of Pt England Extension were lucky enough to be apart of this event.

The trip to Hobsonville was a 1hr drive, and it was pretty exhausting especially when there was no music. We arrived at HPPS (Hobsonville Point Primary School) at quarter to 9:00, just in time to collect our Swag Bags which included a map of the school, our own name tags and a bag of bagel chips, finally it was time to get GEG NZ for 2015 started.

We walked towards the school gym which was located down the hall, and we grabbed a seat. The HPPS ambassadors, lead the beginning with a Himene and a few words, they gave us house keeping rules and the day was started.

Our First session was located just down the hall 7B. We rushed down towards the classroom to find that it was packed with a whole range of people from different schools. Finally we were seated, the session started off with tips about ‘Stratch’ , how to work it, what the program features are and how the characters works.

Next, we moved onto the 2nd part of the session which was playing with the Makey Makey. The Makey Makey, was a little tool that had a lot of wires, firstly we were given a bag that included the Makey Makey, Play Dough and a whole bunch of wires.

The first thing we did was hook up the wires to the makey makey, then we made a object with the play dough, secondly my group and I plugged the black cord to the object that we made, which was a snow man, then once the the snow man was touched the sound that was put into scratch will play, and the commands that were given to the character will do what it was told to do.

Session two was just near, and we knew that our group was presenting. Our
group presentation was based on PENN (Pt England News Network), we told the audience what it was all about and how it worked. Then it was time to get the audience involved, making there very own PENN episode.

Firstly we spilt the crowd into 4 groups of 4, then it was time to put there acting skills to the test, each person had the chance to present each topic, everyone had a sentence to say. After recording the PENN made at GEG NZ was done, and was ready to be broadcasted.

In my group, there was Myself, Josephine, Stevenson, Jordan S, Ana V, Khaia, and Paige.

How I Require and Spend Money.

Money is a currency that is universal, in many countries there is what you call a national currency, for example in New Zealand our currency is the Dollar, in the islands such as Samoa and Tonga their currency is the Tala and Panga. Currencies vary all over the world, and so does the value of them. I acquire money in various ways however I prefer not to save.

There are numerous ways I obtain money, such as working, selling goods, receiving money from parents, or on special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, Christmas along with New Years. To get money for myself it is pretty straight forward, chores. Working around the house has always been a way to get hard and fast cash whether it’s $5 or $7 it still counts as money.

I find it really difficult to save and obtain money, because there a many things that I want. I usually spend most of my money on the latest fashion trend rather than the important things. But, I have learnt that it is very critical to save.

In conclusion saving money and budgeting is the best things to do with money.

Future Thinkers - Pat Quinn

For reading in the past week, we were given an Artical to read. It was about the Future Thinkers, of our society. In the presentation above it states what some of the students answerers are and some of my own knowledge that I picked up while I was reading!

Tiritiri Matangi

On Wednesday the extension group and I went on a trip to an open sanctuary. We boarded our shuttles at 8am and then we were off, arriving at Britomart we met people from D.O.C (Department of Conservation), who helped us and informed us about the trip, Where we are going, What we are doing, and how we can do things to improve the wildlife life in the island.

I walked down toward the Ferry, but suddenly stopped by a staff member. 'Is your shoes clean?' 'Yes' I replied, making our way to the Ferry we noticed that it wasn't only us, there were more people, I peeked up to the top ground and found a whole lot of people sitting on the top ground 'I guess were sitting at bottom' I mumbled to myself.
Going to Tiritiri Matangi, is going to help us learn about the wildlife and the many species the live or came to the island, to learn about endangered species, and species that we never knew existed.

Finally we were at Tiritiri, we made our way out of the ferry to find a bridge across the water, it reminded me of when we went out camping at Kawau Island. Steadily walking across the bridge we were on the other side, us students were seated down just below a man and women who instructed us on what we are doing, where we are going and rules on the island.

Eventually after a lot of talking with Barbra & John we started our tour. Splited into our groups were taken into different tracks and started our guided tour. Our first stop was the Little Blue Penguin, there were 2 boxes shaped like rocks and a glass box inside laid 2 Korora. Our group struggled with seeing the Penguin’s so using technology *Camera we were able to see it clearly.

Along the tracks we learnt many things, we noticed that some tress had ribbon fastened on them. We asked our guide what it meant she said that the ribbons mean that someone is studying the specific tree, or the area.

From going on the trip I learnt the following things
  • Nature is important.
  • The lighthouse is the longest working light house
  • We need to take care of birds and species for the future.
  • That there are Weta motels.
  • We may see birds that we may never see again.
  • Birds like sugar with water
  • Trees provide food.

Before we headed back home we got the chance to play scanvanger hunt! The questions were very challenging and we had to use some of our own knowledge to answere these question.

Thanks you very much D.O.C, for the chance that you gave us to go to tiritiri Matangi!

Miracle at Birth.

All three weighed 4lbs 11ozs, and two were conjoined while one, Catalina (above), was not.

babiesMiracle at Birth

A women in Texas U.S.A has beaten one in a 50 million odds, by giving birth to triplets, however there is a catch, two are conjoined at the pelvis. ( lower stomach region ) Mrs Silvia Hernandez and her husband were thrilled to find out they were having triplets, but despite that their were health concerns for two of the girls that were conjoined at the pelvis.

The 3 baby girls all weighed approximately 3 pounds so therefore they are severely under weight.
It is extremely rare to give birth to triplets but more abnormal when they are identical the odds are 1 in 60,000 to 1 in 200 million.

Dr. Haroom Patel a surgeon at Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christ, said, ‘It will be at least six months till the conjoined babies, who share one colon, will be separated’ but until then the girls will be one.

One in a million conjoined twins survive child birth which means that Silvia giving birth to triplets and them surviving is unusual. Silvia, her husband and their son welcomed the 3 baby girls, Catalina, Ximena and Scarlett were born Saturday at Corpus Christi Medical Center in South Texas.

Mrs Silvia stated on Facebook the truth of this horrific journey. 'The truth is I cried, not because of how the babies would look because we knew we would do our best to give them the best and most productive life possible,Mrs Silvia said “I cried because the doctor said we had to understand and accept the fact that once they were born they could die”

Funding pages have been set up for the family to help them pay for the triplets medical bills. The conjoined babies will be going through surgery before they can be separated

Nesian Fusion Assembly - Zeal Zone

Not long ago, the whole school experienced the Nesian Fusion Performance. The Year 7&8 block was especially lucky cause they got to encounter work shops after the performances. Students from Howick College along with their teacher gave us, year 7&8 students the chance to learn key features in their performance like Fire Dance, Ailao Dancing (Samoan Stick Dancing), and lastly learn about the background's of each costume they wore.

My friends and I were very fortunate to work with one of New Zealand's Artist, Poet, and Jewellery designer Rosanna Raymond, she gave us information on specific costumes as well as Jewellery, there was on specific jewellery that really intrigued me. The Necklace. It had Pig Horns, little Shark Teeth and Brains of Shark.

I learnt that back then some of the clothing you would think was bad, but everything has a story behind it. Back in the day Men and Women in the island would just wear Bottoms and Tops *Crop* and just walk around,  due to the hot hot weather.

Q & A - George Bollinger

Zeal Zone - Art

Today in our Zeal Zone groups, we were given the task to create a symbol other then a poppy as a remembrance accessory for Anzac. As you can see in the image above, I have created a Dove and along back side of the Dove, is the New Zealand Fern.

I decided to use these two images for the following reasons :

1 . The Dove, represents peace. It symbolise when the war finally came to an end and all countries had peace at last.

2 . New Zealand Fern, the fern represents New Zealand and the fact that they went to war and fought for our country.

Tamaki College - Persuasive Text

Travelling long distance to get to school? Walking miles to get to the bus stop? And you live here in the East? Have you ever considered going to Tamaki after Year 8 at Pt England? I consider that all students attending Pt England should go to Tamaki College when they finish Pt England, for the following reasons.

NCEA results have been improving by storm! Tamaki College’s NCEA results have been improving by great quantity of numbers, in 2013 Tamaki College achieved an 80% pass rate.

Staff at Tamaki College have been pushing students to prepare them for their for their upcoming exams. Prefects, hosting study class’s after school, Teachers running little groups for children who need the extra help! But wait there's more!

Tamaki College, is part of the Manaiakalani Cluster which means if you’re moving into High school from Pt England you have the opportunity to take you Chromebook along with you. Tamaki is the only secondary school in the Manaiakalani cluster, and is the closes college to Pt England.

Service Trades Academy is a option available at Tamaki College, so it means that if you are wanting to be a part of the Navy or an Police Woman/Man you are capable of doing this at Tamaki College!

Teacher’s are brilliant! The Tamaki Teachers, are one of the most intelligents teachers you could ever meet. Tamaki Teachers, make college seem so easy to most students, and I must admit, their pretty good at what they are doing!

Changing your mind yet? Let me tell you one last thing!

Offers good quality education and knowledge! At Tamaki College class mobility is one of the main focus in this secondary school, so this means that children who are in the lower classes actually get the chance to move up a level, with the encouragement of the teachers as well as students.
